Logo Branding on Down Jackets: Embroidery, Screen Print and Heat Transfer

Down fabric is lofty and coated, so branding needs different planning. Compare embroidery, screen print and heat transfer, plus placement guidance.

Embroidery: best texture, but manage needle holes

Embroidery is dimensional and durable, and is commonly used for smaller chest logos, names and department identifiers. Down fabric can release fill through needle holes, so a fusible or down-proof backing is normally added to stabilise the fabric and seal the perforations.

Avoid quilting seams and overly lofty areas, and review text size and line weight: very fine lines and small lettering can blur on a puffy surface, so readability should be checked at the proof stage.

Screen print and heat transfer: watch the coating and the heat

Screen print suits clear colour blocks and larger artwork such as a back print, but down shells often carry a down-proof or wind-resistant coating. Ink adhesion and curing conditions should be assessed by the production team to avoid cracking or peeling.

Heat transfer can reproduce more colours and finer detail, but temperature and pressure must match the fabric: too much heat or pressure can collapse the loft of the fill or change the hand feel of the coated shell. A small test piece before bulk production is recommended.

Placement and artwork preparation

A common approach is embroidery for a small chest mark, screen print or heat transfer for a larger back graphic, and a sleeve badge depending on the sleeve shape and fill thickness. On a vest, the usable areas are concentrated on the left chest and the back, so confirm the actual dimensions before designing.

Supply a vector or high-resolution source file and state the placement, size, colours and quantity. Approving a production proof avoids costly rework caused by method limitations.
