Different warmth principles, different performance

Down traps air between its clusters to create an insulating layer, which gives a high warmth-to-weight ratio and easy packability for light, portable garments. Padded jackets use synthetic fill such as hollow fibre; the fibres do not absorb much water, so the garment keeps more of its warmth when damp and dries faster.

The two options are complementary rather than competing. Down is most efficient in dry cold, while padded jackets are more stable in wet, frequently washed working conditions and are usually more affordable.

Choose by the real use case

If the team spends long hours outdoors in winter, needs a packable layer, or wants a mid-layer for layering, a down jacket or down vest is usually the better fit. If the working environment is damp, garments are washed frequently, or budget is tight and weight is less critical, padded jackets and padded vests are the more practical choice.

A single organisation can mix both: down for field staff and padded styles for indoor or support teams, keeping one colour palette and logo placement so the brand still looks consistent.

  • Dry cold and light packable warmth: down jacket or down vest
  • Damp, rainy or frequently washed: padded jacket or padded vest
  • Layering system: down or padded vest as a mid-layer
  • Tighter budget or larger quantities: compare padded styles with entry-level down fill

Care routine and service life

Down garments are best washed with a mild or down-specific detergent, then tumble dried on low heat with dryer balls to restore loft. Long-term compression storage reduces the ability to recover, so hang or store loosely. Padded jackets can generally be machine washed and dry quickly, but high heat and fabric softener accelerate clumping of the fill and ageing of the shell.

For both types, avoid fabric softener, bleach and high-temperature ironing, and always follow the care label to maintain warmth and appearance.
