Duck Down vs Goose Down: Differences and Sourcing Choices

Compare duck and goose down by cluster structure, fill power, odour and price to balance budget against warmth performance.

Cluster structure and fill power

Goose down clusters are generally larger and trap more air, so for the same weight they usually deliver a higher fill power, a better warmth-to-weight ratio and easier compression. Duck down clusters are smaller on average, but maturity, origin and the washing process also matter: well-processed duck down can reach 650 or even 700 fill power.

Sourcing decisions should not rest on the word duck or goose alone. Check fill power, fill weight and the down-to-feather ratio (for example 90/10 or 80/20). A higher down content usually means better loft and warmth.

Odour, hand feel and everyday wear

Duck down tends to have a more noticeable natural odour, although the difference is usually hard to detect in finished garments that have been thoroughly washed and dried. Goose down feels lighter and softer, which helps in very lightweight designs.

For corporate uniforms, school teams and volunteer events, duck down meets the warmth requirement in most cases and helps control cost. Goose down is worth considering where extreme light weight or extended use in very low temperatures is required.

Practical sourcing advice

Set the warmth level from real temperature and wear time first, compare fill options second, and compare unit price last. If a team has both indoor and outdoor roles, keep one colour palette but specify a higher fill power for outdoor styles and entry-level fill for indoor or light-duty use.

Whichever fill you choose, ask the supplier to state fill power, fill weight and down-to-feather ratio, confirm care instructions, and approve the artwork proof and size set before production.
